Optimization of wedge grafting technique in mango under North-western Sub-Himalayan region

Abstract

 

Aim: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of pre-grafting scion wood defoliation and time of grafting on the performance of wedge grafted plants of mango (Mangifera indica L.) under subtropical conditions of Himachal Pradesh.

Methodology: The experiment was conducted using one-year-old seedling rootstocks of mango, which were wedge grafted with scion wood matured by defoliating 7 or 14 days before grafting. The wedge grafting was performed in July, August, September, October, February and March in a Complete Randomized Design at the experimental farm of the Department of Fruit Science, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Neri, during the year 2021-2022.Observations were recorded on grafting success (%), total saleable plants (%) and vegetative growth parameters.

Results: Grafting performed during the first fortnight of August with scion wood defoliated 7 days before grafting yielded the highest graft success, total number of saleable plants and superior vegetative growth parameters, including sprout length and plant height.

Interpretation: First fortnight of August was the most favorable month for wedge grafting in mango, particularly with scion wood defoliated 7 days prior, ensuring higher graft success.
